It’s the best deal you haven’t bought yet. It’s the thing your friends won’t shut up about (no, not their new baby). It’s the only feasible way for you to afford seeing all the movies coming to theaters these days. That’s right, we’re talking about AMC A-List.
For only $27.99/month, you can see up to 4 movies per week each month, whichever format you prefer. IMAX, Dolby, 3D, 4DX, pick your poison. Considering an average ticket costs between $13.99-$25.49, seeing just 2-3 movies a month already makes it worth the monthly admission price.
And there’s really no better time than right now to sign up! It’s summer blockbuster time baby, and the hits keep rolling. Just last month we had a new rom-com from Celine Song, a 20+ year return to the franchise that kicked off the fast-zombie craze, and an F1 racing movie from the director of Top Gun: Maverick (sans Tom Cruise, sadly). July has kept up the momentum so far, with the new Superman taking over social media and….well, another Jurassic movie came out. So there’s that.
If you’re feeling nostalgic for the tumultuous year that was 2020, there’s Ari Aster’s new film Eddington sure to stir up all sorts of cozy, warm feelings. And this week we finally have the return of Marvel’s first family with Fantastic Four: First Steps, making this seriously the best time to join the club your friends keep telling you to join. (Though if you’re feeling a cozy weekend at home instead, a certain profanity-blaring golfer makes his return to the small screen on Netflix in Happy Gilmore 2, sure to be packed with cameos galore).
To help guide you on your new cinephile journey, I’ll be giving you my top recs for the week, month, and foreseeable future! Here’s what my girlfriend and I have seen so far this month:
Superman
Look in the sky!
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s….a bright (and more shockingly, hopeful) Superman movie? Gone are the days of desaturated costumes and CGI-removed mustaches (Henry Cavill, you deserved so much better) and here instead are some of the most colorful and comic accurate portrayal of some of DC’s premier heroes, including Hawkgirl played by current “it” actress Isabella Merced, Green Lantern played by James Gunn movie-staple Nathan Fillion (let’s all pretend this is the first live-action Green Lantern, agreed?) and the now sure to be fan-favorite, Mr. Terrific played by Edi Gathegi. Add-in some of the best Lois, Lex, and Clark/Supes interpretations we’ve seen yet by Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholaus Hoult, and David Corenswet respectively, and you’ve got another Gunn superhero ensemble ready to capture the world’s hearts. Oh, and don’t forget the most important hero of the all: everyone’s favorite goodest boy, Krypto.
For fans of: Dogs, bowlcuts, and punk rock. Seriously.
Eddington
Ready for a blast from the not-so distant past? How about a return to the warm, welcoming arms of May 2020, a perfectly normal time in human history. Tragedy plus time equals comedy, right? Ari Aster’s latest black humor drama Eddington takes a satirical glance back at a time of great division within the country, examining the nuances and faults of modern politics and turns the anxiety dial up to 10. A stellar cast led by Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal battling for mayoral control over their small town makes this dour tale a bit more engaging to watch, building to an absolute bonkers third act, like most of Aster’s films. Though not for everyone due to its tonal imbalance and subject material, it’s sure to be the “did you see ___??” flick of the year.
For fans of: Arguments about masks, blockchain, and local elections.
Coming Soon: Next week I’ll be giving my thoughts on Fantastic Four: First Steps, as well as Sorry, Baby.
