Freestyle Love Supreme — Whose Line is it Anyway? Meets Hip Hop

In an episode of Curb your enthusiasm Larry David talks about his childhood and how his Mother once got upset with him for never getting excited about anything.  I’d quote it directly, but I can’t find it and I’m not sorry for that.  Either way, it was a thought that resonated.  I think I drag my feet to everything I’ve ever done.  Parties, happy hours, weddings, reunions – really any situation where I have to put pants on and interact with other humans is dreadful.  I even find myself dragging my feet before vacations.

There is one thing, however, that gets me excited.  Well, two things – besides sex with my wife (the excitement’s mutual, right?) the one thing that truly gets me excited is the broadway show Freestyle Love Supreme.

Freestyle Love Supreme or FLS is an improv comedy show based in NYC that employs the use of freestyle rapping.  Similar to an improv show the performers solicit suggestions from the 800 person audience at the famous Booth Theatre in NYC.  After soliciting said suggestions, two musicians, 3-4 mc’s and a beatboxer collectively rap and play different hip hop infused games on the spot.  I don’t want to call this experience an orgasm, but honestly – it’s a fucking orgasm.

I have seen this show over ten times and my wife has seen it closer to 15 and to be clear, I am broke.  I also want to be clear, I am really not a broadway guy. Gasp!  I’ve seen Aladdin and Hamilton and sure they were great, but the singing, dancing and general make up of plays just isn’t my thing – don’t hate me you Hamilton heads it’s not you, it’s me – I’m classless.

If it’s any consolation, FLS was co-created by Lin Manuel Miranda in between rehearsals for ‘In the Heights.’  A great, low commitment way to learn about it is through the FLS documentary on Hulu.  However, if you’re interested in one of the most fun, interactive, fast, witty, catchy and straight-up hilarious shows you’ll ever see—not to mention an orgasm—check out FLS.  They kick off their national tour starting in 2022.  I promise you won’t regret it, and if you do, at least you climaxed. Lastly, I’d highly recommend entering the FLS lottery.  I won once before and had the pleasure of front row seats for a mere $25.
