Drunken Karaoke: Megan Thee Stallion

The infamous ‘It’ factor. It happens often in the industry that you come across an artist that has that indescribable uniqueness that skyrockets their career into the front of the limelight. A few examples of this can be seen in the likes of Lil Nas X, Billie Eillish and many more. For the last two years, there has been one female rapper that has catapulted herself into the forefront of the hip hop scene, Megan Thee Stallion.

Fans became introduced to the Houston artist with her debut single, ‘Big Ole Freak’ in late 2018, early 2019 off of her mixtape, Tina Snow. She quickly became a force to be reckoned with due to her sexualized lyrics and her freestyles that she posts on social media. With influences from Nicki Minaj, Bun B and Pimp C, Megan Thee Stallion’s talent shines through from the beginning. In her first two years, she released two mixtapes, an EP and has built quite the discography  in her first two years with collaborations from Juicy J, DaBaby and Beyonce all while finishing college.

This November, Megan Thee Stallion released her debut album, Good News. The title was dedicated to the fans as she felt that after the difficult year we’ve had in 2020, both her and her fans were overdue for something good to come. Outside of music, Megan saw herself in a public shooting scandal with Canadian rapper, Tory Lanez. She discusses her truths on the album’s opening track ‘Shots Fired’, which she details of the events that happened earlier in the summer. This song on the album can be seen as the only breakaway from her normal topic of conversations in her song (sex, relationships and women empowerment).

Megan Thee Stallion stacked her debut with a slew of features from City Girls, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, SZA and more. Previously heard, Tik Tok viral singles, ‘Girls In The Hood, ‘Don’t Stop’ featuring Young Thug  and the #1 single, ‘Savage’ featuring Beyonce can be found on the album. She continues to capitalize on the dance crazes of Tik Tok with her newly released single, ‘Body’. 2020 has become the year of the Stallion, making some of the catchiest songs over the last few years. With comparisons to Trina & Lil’ Kim, Megan Thee Stallion has become a household name and when we are able to see concerts again, please be sure to catch a live performance from her. Good News is that we have a lot of content to hold us over until that happens.
