Photograph

It looks at first like a boudoir photo, Frida Kahlo in a satin robe artfully disarranged to offer a glimpse of her small, taut breasts, but look again and you can see that against a prim background of flowered wallpaper, she is gripping a six shooter with both hands and that slung low on her hips is the sort of cartridge belt a Mexican revolutionary might wear in a Hollywood Western, and while the expression on her face is bland, her large eyes appear entirely black and, in fact, seem almost to crackle with the dark radiation of collapsed stars.
