Two Poems By Emma Reyes

Ode to Video Games

“It’s You! Despite everything, it’s still you.”- From Undertale

The clicking of your thumbs against the buttons has become

my white noise, the only one that helps me sleep. It’s not

just the sound but you––frustratingly twisting your toes.

It’s the preparation of standing in Target, helping you pick out a fan

that will cool your room down from the heat your toy box

generates. Goodnight kiss is clammy hands petting my shoulder.

Half awake feeling heavy breath on my forehead when you finally win.

Something about us and the need to escape the heat below us.

Watch it sizzle from the view of your PS4.

Worst Times: Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I’ll never write a poem about Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Last time I did, my dog threw up all over my

brand new t-shirt, It was a good one from Goodwill

and it said “Cutie” in pink sparkles.

I hate Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Last time I watched it my apartment flooded

and my tv exploded. And I had finally got to

the part she sings “Moon River”.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is overrated!

Last time I saw a postcard of Audrey Hepburn

I saw a building burn down. And then the moon

turned into a crisp fiery asteroid.

All because someone pretended their favorite movie

was one about being rich in black and white.

Emma Reyes is a poet who just graduated from FSU. She’s currently applying for grad school and has desperately been trying to figure out if her name sounds better as Emma Reyes, Emma V. Reyes, or Emma Victoria Reyes. Her twitter handle is (@hotsaucekirby).
